This is love (2 John 1:6)

“This is love.

We walk

According to his commandments.

This is the commandment

Just as you have heard it

From the beginning.

You must walk it.”

This author said, “This is love (καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ ἀγάπη).  We walk (ἵνα περιπατῶμεν) according to his commandments (κατὰ τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ).  This is the commandment (αὕτη ἡ ἐντολή ἐστιν), just as you have heard it (καθὼς ἠκούσατε) from the beginning (ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς).  You must walk it (ἵνα ἐν αὐτῇ περιπατῆτε).”  This author was very insistent.  He explained what love is.  It was not good enough to talk about loving your brother, you had to walk the talk.  Pious platitudes were not good enough.  There was nothing surprising.  He wanted them to follow the commandments that they had heard from the beginning of their following of Jesus Christ.  If they wanted to be a follower of Jesus Christ, they had to walk in his footsteps by following his commandments.  This had to be a lived commitment, not merely a talked about ideal.  This was much like in 1 John, chapter 2.  Do you walk the talk about loving other human beings?
