“These people
Are like irrational animals,
Mere creatures of instinct,
Born to be caught
And destroyed.
They slander
What they do not understand.
When those animal creatures
Are destroyed,
They also will be destroyed.”
This author said, “These people (οὗτοι δέ) are like (ὡς) irrational animals (ἄλογα ζῷα), mere creatures of instinct (φυσικὰ), born (γεγεννημένα) to be caught (εἰς ἅλωσιν) and destroyed (καὶ φθοράν). They slander (βλασφημοῦντες) what they do not understand (ἐν οἷς ἀγνοοῦσιν). When those animal creatures are destroyed (ἐν τῇ φθορᾷ αὐτῶν), they also will be destroyed (καὶ φθαρήσονται).” Among the canonical Greek New Testament writings, this is the only time that this word appeared in 2 Peter, the word ἅλωσιν, that means a taking or capturing. This author indicated that the evil blaspheming lustful people were like irrational animals. These evil sensuous passionate people lived like animals or creatures of instinct. Their whole existence was to be caught and destroyed. These evil humans slandered and blasphemed what they did not understand. Just like these instinctive animals, these bad humans will be destroyed also. Do you think irrational animals should be caught and destroyed?
