“Many will follow
Their licentious ways.
Because of these teachers,
The way of truth
Will be maligned.”
καὶ πολλοὶ ἐξακολουθήσουσιν αὐτῶν ταῖς ἀσελγείαις, δι’ οὓς ἡ ὁδὸς τῆς ἀληθείας βλασφημηθήσεται·
This author said, “Many (καὶ πολλοὶ) will follow (ἐξακολουθήσουσιν) their licentious ways (ταῖς ἀσελγείαις). Because of these teachers (δι’ οὓς), the way (ἡ ὁδὸς) of truth (τῆς ἀληθείας) will be maligned (βλασφημηθήσεται).” Among the canonical Greek New Testament writings, this is the only time that this word appeared in 2 Peter, ἐξακολουθήσουσιν, that means to follow up, imitate, or follow after. This author regretted that many of the Christians will follow or imitate these false teachers. They will follow or engage in sensuous or licentious behavior. Thus, the path of truth will be blasphemed or maligned. False teaching was the opposite of the truth about Jesus Christ. Do you follow false teachers?
