τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες, ὅτι πᾶσα προφητεία γραφῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως οὐ γίνεται·
This author said, “First of all (πρῶτον), you must understand (γινώσκοντες) this (τοῦτο). All (ὅτι πᾶσα) prophecy (προφητεία) of scripture (γραφῆς) is not (οὐ γίνεται) a matter of one’s own interpretation (ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως).” Among the canonical Greek New Testament writings, this is the only time that this word appeared in 2 Peter, ἐπιλύσεως, that means a release, an interpretation, solution, or explanation. This author made clear to his readers. There was only one way to interpret prophetic scripture, the orthodox way, since there was no room for personal individual interpretations.
