Blessed be God! (1 Pet 1:3)

“Blessed be the God

And Father

Of our Lord

Jesus Christ!

By his great mercy,

He has given us

A new birth

Into a living hope

Through the resurrection

Of Jesus Christ

From the dead.”

This author said “Blessed be (Εὐλογητὸς) the God (ὁ Θεὸς) and Father (καὶ Πατὴρ) of our Lord (τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν) Jesus Christ (Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ)!  By his great mercy (ὁ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος), he has given us (ἡμᾶς) a new birth (ἀναγεννήσας) into a living hope (εἰς ἐλπίδα ζῶσαν) through the resurrection (δι’ ἀναστάσεως) of Jesus Christ (Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ) from the dead (ἐκ νεκρῶν).”  Only this author, 1 Peter, among all the canonical NT works used this word ἀναγεννήσας, that means to beget again, or begin a new life.  This author stated his main thesis.  God the Father has blessed you through Jesus Christ.  The merciful God has given you a new birth and a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.  The resurrection of Jesus Christ has given you new life and hope.  You have to take advantage of this situation.  Some have suggested that this letter may have originally been a baptismal homily, as the new Christians were about to begin their new Christian life.  Do you feel reborn in Christ?
