Good standing deacons (1 Tim. 3:13)

“Those who serve well

As deacons

Gain a good standing

For themselves

And great confidence

In the faith

That is in Christ Jesus.”

Paul said, “Those who serve well as deacons (οἱ γὰρ καλῶς διακονήσαντες) gain (περιποιοῦνται) a good standing for themselves (βαθμὸν ἑαυτοῖς καλὸν) and great confidence (καὶ πολλὴν παρρησίαν) in the faith (ἐν πίστει) that is in Christ Jesus (τῇ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ).”  Only this letter to Timothy used this unique word βαθμὸν, that means a step, degree, a stage in a career, or a position.  Paul seemed to encourage people to be deacons.  He pointed out that those who served well as deacons would gain a good reputation and standing among their fellow Christian community members.  At the same time, they would gain and increase their confidence in their faith in Jesus Christ.  Thus, these deacons would be praised by their fellow Christians, while increasing their own Christian beliefs.  Does your belief in Jesus Christ increase?
