How can he take care of God’s church? (1 Tim. 3:5)

“If someone does not know

How to manage

His own household.

How can he take care

Of God’s church?”

εἰ δέ τις τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου προστῆναι οὐκ οἶδεν, πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ ἐπιμελήσεται;

Paul said, “If someone (εἰ δέ τις) does not know (οὐκ οἶδεν) how to manage (προστῆναι) his own household (τοῦ ἰδίου οἴκου).  How can he (οὐκ οἶδεν) take care of (ἐπιμελήσεται) God’s church (πῶς ἐκκλησίας Θεοῦ)?”  Only the Pauline letters used this word προστῆναι, that means preside, rule over, give attention to, direct, or maintain.  Paul asked a simple question.  If someone is not able to or does not know how to manage his own household affairs, how could he expect to take care of God’s church, the community of Christian believers?  If they could not take care of their own family, how would they able to take care of God’s family, the followers of Jesus Christ?  Paul was stating the obvious.  How do you take care of your family?
