Please God! (1 Thess. 4:1)

We ask you!

We urge you!

In the Lord Jesus that,

As you have learned

From us

How you ought to live

And to please God,

As in fact,

You are doing.

You should do so

More and more.”

Paul said, “Brothers (ἀδελφοί)!  Finally (Λοιπὸν οὖν), we ask you (ἐρωτῶμεν ὑμᾶς)!  We urge you (καὶ παρακαλοῦμεν)!  In the Lord Jesus (ἐν Κυρίῳ Ἰησοῦ), that as you have learned from us (ἵνα καθὼς παρελάβετε παρ’ ἡμῶν) how you ought to live (πῶς δεῖ ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν) and to please God (καὶ ἀρέσκειν Θεῷ), as in fact (καθὼς), you are doing (καὶ περιπατεῖτε).  You should do so more and more (ἵνα περισσεύητε μᾶλλον).”  Paul now turned to moral encouragement.  He had some instructions on how they were to live as followers of Jesus Christ.  He called the Thessalonians his brothers in Christ.  We asked them and urged them to do these things in the name of Jesus Christ.  They were to live or walk their lives as they had learned from Paul and his companions.  They had learned from Paul the correct way to lead their lives.  They were to please God.  Paul was very complimentary to them.  They were already leading good Christian lives.  However, he wanted them to do more, make more moral progress.  He was going to lay out some simple dos and don’ts.  Do you try to do more to please God?
