May your love increase (1 Thess. 3:12)

“May the Lord

Make you increase

And abound

In love

For one another

And for all people.

Just as we abound

In love

For you.”

Paul said, “May the Lord (δὲ ὁ Κύριος) make you (ὑμᾶς) increase (πλεονάσαι) and abound (καὶ περισσεύσαι) in love (τῇ ἀγάπῃ) for one another (εἰς ἀλλήλους) and for all people (καὶ εἰς πάντας).  Just as we abound in love for you (καθάπερ καὶ ἡμεῖς εἰς ὑμᾶς).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word πλεονάσαι, that means to super abound, to abound, more than enough, or increase, and the word καθάπερ, that means just as or even as.  Paul prayed that the Lord Jesus Christ would increase their love for each other and all people.  This was not a limited love, but a boundless love.  Paul certainly had a great love for the Christian Thessalonians, who were not like the pesky Christian Corinthians.  Paul tended to use the superlative to express his love that was always super abounding.  Love should grow exponentially and not linear.  He wanted them to love each other as much as he loved them.  Is love increasing in your life?
