We did not use flattery (1 Thess. 2:5)

“As you know,

And God

Is our witness,

We never came

With words of flattery

At any time

Or with a pretext

For greed.”

οὔτε γάρ ποτε ἐν λόγῳ κολακίας ἐγενήθημεν, καθὼς οἴδατε, οὔτε ἐν προφάσει πλεονεξίας, Θεὸς μάρτυς,

Paul said, “As you know (καθὼς οἴδατε), and God is our witness (Θεὸς μάρτυς), we never (οὔτε) came (ἐγενήθημεν) with words of flattery (ἐν λόγῳ κολακίας) at any time (γάρ ποτε) or with a pretext for greed (οὔτε ἐν προφάσει πλεονεξίας).”  Only this letter to the Thessalonians used this unique word κολακίας, that means flattery or a view to advantage or gainPaul further indicated that he never used flattering words or any pretentions about greed.  They knew this.  God was his witness.  He never tried to deceive any one at any time, pretending that something was not true.  Paul was a straight shooter.  Are you a straight shooter when you speak?
