Approved by God (1 Thess. 2:4)

“Just as we have been approved

By God

To be entrusted

With the gospel,

Even so we speak,

Not to please mortals,

But to please God,

Who tests our hearts.”

Paul said Just as we have been approved (ἀλλὰ καθὼς δεδοκιμάσμεθα) by God (ὑπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ) to be entrusted (πιστευθῆναι) with the gospel (τὸ εὐαγγέλιον), even so we speak (οὕτως λαλοῦμεν), not to please other mortals (οὐχ ὡς ἀνθρώποις ἀρέσκοντες), but to please God (ἀλλὰ Θεῷ) who tests (τῷ δοκιμάζοντι) our hearts (τὰς καρδίας ἡμῶν).”  Paul maintained that he had been approved by God who had entrusted him with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Nevertheless, Paul and his companions spoke not to please other human men but to please God.  He knew that God was testing their hearts.  Paul only wanted to please God, not other human people.  Who do you want to please?
