You have turned to a living and true God (1 Thess. 1:9)

“The people of that region

Reported about us

About what kind of welcome

We had among you.

How you turned

To God

From idols,

To serve

A living

And true God.”

Paul said, “The people of that region (αὐτοὶ γὰρ) reported (ἀπαγγέλλουσιν) about us (περὶ ἡμῶν) about what kind of welcome (ὁποίαν εἴσοδον) we had among you (ἔσχομεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς).  How you turned (καὶ πῶς ἐπεστρέψατε) to God (πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν) from idols (ἀπὸ τῶν εἰδώλων), to serve (δουλεύειν) a living (ζῶντι) and true (καὶ ἀληθινῷ) God (Θεῷ).”  Paul indicated that the people in the area of Thessalonica reported how welcoming the Thessalonians were to Paul and his companions.  They had turned from worshiping idols to worshiping the one true living God.  Obviously, this was an indication that Thessalonica was a predominately gentile city that worshipped idols.  In Acts, chapter 17:1-9, Paul went to the Jewish people in Thessalonica first.  However, the Jewish people turned on Paul and Silas after a couple of weeks.  Here Paul used the Jewish terminology about worshipping the true and living God, a monotheism as opposed to a polytheism.  This was dominant in early Christian teaching.  They had to abandon the worship of false idols in order to worship and serve the one true living God.  Have you ever worshipped false idols?
