The power of the gospel (1 Thess. 1:5)

“Our gospel

Came to you

Not in word only,

But also,

In the power

In the Holy Spirit,

And with full conviction.

Just as you know

What kind of persons

We proved to be

Among you

For your sake.”

Paul said, “Our gospel (ὅτι τὸ εὐαγγέλιον ἡμῶν) came to you not (οὐκ ἐγενήθη εἰς ὑμᾶς) in word only (ἐν λόγῳ μόνον), but also in the power (ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐν δυνάμει) in the Holy Spirit (καὶ ἐν Πνεύματι Ἁγίῳ), and with full conviction (καὶ πληροφορίᾳ πολλῇ).  Just as you know (καθὼς οἴδατε) what kind of persons we proved to be among you for your sake (οἷοι ἐγενήθημεν ἐν ὑμῖν δι’ ὑμᾶς).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word πληροφορίᾳ, that means full assurance, conviction, or confidence.  Paul explained that his gospel message did not come with mere words.  There was the power of God in this gospel message of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit.  This is one of the oldest uses of the term “Holy Spirit”.  They had a full conviction or belief.  They knew what kind of people Paul and his companions were when they were there with them in Thessalonica among them.  Thus, Paul remembered his early days with them and the powerful working of the Holy Spirit in that community.  Does the power of the Holy Spirit work in your community?
