Unity of the Spirit (Eph. 4:3)

“Make every effort

To maintain

The unity of the Spirit

In the bond

Of peace.”

σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ Πνεύματος ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ τῆς εἰρήνης·

Paul said, “Make every effort (σπουδάζοντες) to maintain (τηρεῖν) the unity (τὴν ἑνότητα) of the Holy Spirit (τοῦ Πνεύματος) in the bond (ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ) of peace (τῆς εἰρήνης).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word σπουδάζοντες, that means hasten, to give diligence, eager, or zealous.  Only this Ephesian letter used this unique word ἑνότητα, that means to adjure, oneness, unity, or unanimity.  Paul continued with his main theme of unity.  He wanted the Ephesians to try as best they could to maintain unanimity of the Holy Spirit in a bond of peace.  He did not want any contentious disagreements.  He wanted peace among the Christians in the city of Ephesus, since they were united with their baptism in Jesus Christ.  Do you seek unity in your Christian community?
