Lead a worthy life! (Eph. 4:1)

A prisoner for the Lord,

Beg you

To lead a life worthy

Of the calling

To which you have been called.”

Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ ὁ δέσμιος ἐν Κυρίῳ ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι τῆς κλήσεως ἧς ἐκλήθητε,

Paul said, “I, therefore, a prisoner (ἐγὼ ὁ δέσμιος) for the Lord (ἐν Κυρίῳ), beg you (Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς) to lead a life or walk worthy (ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι) of the calling (τῆς κλήσεως) to which you have been called (ἧς ἐκλήθητε).”  Only the Pauline letters have this word ἀξίως, that means worthily, in a manner worthy of, and the word κλήσεως, that means a calling, an invitation, or a divine call.  Paul explained that he was a prisoner of the Lord.  He had devoted his life to Jesus Christ.  He was asking the Ephesians to walk or live their life in a worthy manner.  After all, they too had received the divine call from the Lord when they were baptized.  Are you worthy of the calling that you got from God at your baptism?
