You walked with the disobedient ones (Eph. 2:2)

“You once walked,

Following the course

Of this world,

Following the ruler

Of the power of the air,

The spirit

That is now at work

Among those who are

The sons of disobedience.”

Paul said, “You once walked or lived (ἐν αἷς ποτε περιεπατήσατε), following the course of this world (κατὰ τὸν αἰῶνα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου), following the ruler (κατὰ τὸν ἄρχοντα) of the power of the air (τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ ἀέρος), the spirit (τοῦ πνεύματος) that is now at work (τοῦ νῦν ἐνεργοῦντος) among those who are the sons of disobedience (ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς τῆς ἀπειθείας).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word ἀπειθείας, that means disobedience, willful unbelief, or obstinacy.  Paul explained that they once walked or lived their lives according to the ways of the world.  They followed the ruler who controlled the air, that same spirit that is now alive among the sons of disobedience or obstinacy.  The prince of darkness ruled the air that we breathe.  We have to be careful not to fall back into the ways of the evil ones and the power of the evil one.  We once were like everyone else.  But now we are redeemed through Jesus Christ.  Did you ever live with worldly disobedient people?
