Redeem those under the law (Gal. 4:5)

“His Son came

To redeem

Those who were

Under the law,

So that we might receive

Adoption as children.”

ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον ἐξαγοράσῃ, ἵνα τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπολάβωμεν.

Paul said, “The Son of God came to redeem (ἐξαγοράσῃ) those who were under the law (ἵνα τοὺς ὑπὸ νόμον), so that we might receive adoption as children (ἵνα τὴν υἱοθεσίαν ἀπολάβωμεν).”  Only the Pauline letters used this word ἐξαγοράσῃ, that means to buy up, ransom, to rescue from loss, or redeem, and the word υἱοθεσίαν, that means adoption or as a son into the divine family.  Instead of being the immature heirs, here Paul said that we have become the adopted children of God.  God rescued or redeemed us from our terrible human condition of being under the law.  The slavery of the law was lifted.  We were now the adopted children of God.  This was a two-stage process.  On earth, our lives are lifted up to a new life with the grace of divine sons.  Then, our bodies will be lifted up with an infusion of the divine eternal life at the end times.  Thus, we are the adopted children of God.  Do you believe that God has adopted you?
