“The rest of the Jews
In this hypocrisy.
Was led astray
By their hypocrisy.”
καὶ συνυπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ Ἰουδαῖοι, ὥστε καὶ Βαρνάβας συναπήχθη αὐτῶν τῇ ὑποκρίσει.
Paul said that the rest of the Jews (οἱ λοιποὶ Ἰουδαῖοι) joined Peter in this hypocrisy (καὶ συνυπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ). Even Barnabas (καὶ Βαρνάβας) was led astray (συναπήχθη) by their hypocrisy (αὐτῶν τῇ ὑποκρίσει). This Galatian usage is the only time that this word συνυπεκρίθησαν appears, that means to play a part with, or dissemble. To Paul’s dismay, the rest of the Jewish Christians in Antioch sided with Peter, including Paul’s long-time associate Barnabas. The rest of the Jews joined in this charade or hypocrisy, even Barnabas. The Acts spoke about a fallout between Paul and Barnabas soon after the Council of Jerusalem, but gave the reason as the fitness of John Mark to join Paul’s mission in Acts 15:36–40. Paul was just upset at everyone. Suddenly, all the Jewish Christians were back following the Jewish Torah dietary laws. When these Judaizers were not there, there was no problem with the Jewish and the gentile Christians eating and socializing together. Once this group from Jerusalem showed up everything changed. There was no more intermingling. Do you sometimes stop socializing with some people when other people are around?
