We destroy arguments (2 Cor. 10:5)

“We destroy arguments

And every proud obstacle

Raised up against

The knowledge of God.

We take every thought

Captive

To obey Christ.”

Paul said that we destroy arguments (λογισμοὺς καθαιροῦντες) and every proud obstacle raised up (καὶ πᾶν ὕψωμα ἐπαιρόμενον) against the knowledge of God (κατὰ τῆς γνώσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ).  We take every thought captive (καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζοντες πᾶν νόημα) to obey Christ (εἰς τὴν ὑπακοὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ).  Only the Pauline letters used this word λογισμοὺς, that means a reasoning, a thought, or a conception, and the word ὕψωμα, that means height, lifted up, barrier, or presumption, as well as the word νόημα, that means thought, purpose, design, the mind, the heart, the soul, or the feelings.  Paul indicated that they were out to destroy every argument and every proud obstacle to gaining knowledge about God.  He wanted to capture these evil thoughts and turn them over to the obedience of Christ.  Thus, Paul used this warfare terminology in this spiritual conflict.  God and Christ were on his side.  How do you fight your spiritual wars?
