We will be transformed (2 Cor. 3:18)

“All of us,

With unveiled faces,

Will see

The glory of the Lord,

As though reflected

In a mirror.

We are being transformed

Into the same image

From one degree of glory

To another,

That comes from the Lord,

The Spirit.”

Paul said that all of us (ἡμεῖς δὲ πάντες), with unveiled faces (ἀνακεκαλυμμένῳ προσώπῳ), would see the glory of the Lord (τὴν δόξαν Κυρίου), as though reflected in a mirror (κατοπτριζόμενοι).  We are being transformed (μεταμορφούμεθα) into the same image (τὴν αὐτὴν εἰκόνα) from one degree of glory to another, from glory to glory (ἀπὸ δόξης εἰς δόξαν).  This comes from the Lord (καθάπερ ἀπὸ Κυρίου), the Spirit (Πνεύματος).  Only this Corinthian letter used this word ἀνακεκαλυμμένῳ, that means to unveil or uncover, and the word κατοπτριζόμενοι, that means to reflect as a mirror.  Paul indicated that our uncovered faces would be transformed like the face of Moses, because we would see the glory of the Lord.  Over time, we would be transformed into the image of Jesus Christ, the Lord.  We would share in his glory that comes from the Lord and the Holy Spirit.  Even the Roman and Greek pagans believed that being close to a god changed you into that god.  The Israelites believed that Moses’ face change was due to this closeness to God, Yahweh.  For Paul, sharing in the presence of the Lord meant a share in his spiritual glory, little by little over time.  Do you expect to experience the glory of God?
