Unbelievers do not see the light (2 Cor. 4:4)

“In their case,

The god

Of this world

Has blinded

The minds

Of the unbelievers,

To keep them

From seeing

The illuminated light

Of the gospel

Of the glory

Of Christ,

Who is the likeness

Of God.”

Paul said that in their case (ἐν οἷς), the god of this world (ὁ θεὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου) has blinded (ἐτύφλωσεν) the minds (τὰ νοήματα) of the unbelievers (τῶν ἀπίστων), to keep them from seeing (εἰς τὸ μὴ αὐγάσαι) the illuminated light (τὸν φωτισμὸν) of the gospel (τοῦ εὐαγγελίου) of the glory of Christ (τῆς δόξης τοῦ Χριστοῦ), who is the likeness of God (ὅς ἐστιν εἰκὼν τοῦ Θεοῦ).  Only this Corinthian letter used this word νοήματα, that means thought, purpose, design, the mind, the heart, the soul, or the feelings, and the word αὐγάσαι, that means to shine forth, flash, gleam, bright, or discern, and the word φωτισμὸν, that means illumination, light, luster, or enlightenment.  Who is the god of this world?  Most people assume that this is Satan, the unseen enemy of God who deceives humans.  This worldly god has blinded the eyes, minds, or hearts of the unbelievers.  Thus, they cannot see the bright light of the gospel from the glorious Jesus Christ, who is the image or likeness of God.  The gospel of Jesus is shining but the unbelieving hearts and eyes cannot see it, because the enemy has blinded them.  Are you blinded by the enemies of God?
