Written on human hearts (2 Cor. 3:3)

“You show

That you are a letter

Of Christ

Prepared by us,

Written not with ink

But with the Spirit

Of the living God,

Not on tablets

Of stone

But on tablets

Of human hearts.”

Paul said that you show or reveal (φανερούμενοι) that you are a letter of Christ (ὅτι ἐστὲ ἐπιστολὴ Χριστοῦ) prepared by us (διακονηθεῖσα ὑφ’ ἡμῶν).  This was written (ἐνγεγραμμένη) not with ink (οὐ μέλανι) but with the Spirit of the living God (ἀλλὰ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ζῶντος), not on tablets (οὐκ ἐν πλαξὶν) of stone (λιθίναις) but on tablets (ἀλλ’ ἐν πλαξὶν) of fleshy human hearts (καρδίαις σαρκίναις).  Only the Pauline letters used this word πλαξὶν, that means anything flat, a flat stone, a tablet, or a flat surface, and the word σαρκίναις, that means fleshly, consisting of flesh, carnal, or human.  This saying of Paul is within the Israelite prophetic tradition of Jeremiah and Ezekiel about the Messianic age.  Their cold stone hearts would be replaced with human hearts open to the Spirit.  These Corinthians were like a letter of Christ that Paul had prepared.  However, this letter was not a written ink letter, but written with the Holy Spirit, the living God.  This letter was not going to be written on stone tablets, like the Mosaic ten commandments law, but written in their human fleshy hearts.  Thus, there was a contrast between the stone tablet Old Covenant of Moses and the human heart New Covenant of Jesus.  Do you have a heart like Jesus?
