We are sincere (2 Cor. 2:17)

“We are not

Peddlers of God’s word

Like so many others.

We speak

In Christ

As men of sincerity,

Sent from God,

Standing in his presence.”

Paul said that we are not (οὐ γάρ ἐσμεν) peddlers (καπηλεύοντες) of God’s word (τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ) like so many others (ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ).  We speak in Christ (ἐν Χριστῷ λαλοῦμεν) as men of sincerity (ὡς ἐξ εἰλικρινίας), sent from God (ἀλλ’ ὡς ἐκ Θεοῦ) and standing in his presence (κατέναντι Θεοῦ).  Only this Corinthian letter used this word καπηλεύοντες, that means to make a trade, hawk, or deal for purposes of gain, and the word εἰλικρινίας, that means clearness, purity, or with sincerity.  Paul defended himself.  He was not a street peddler of God’s word, trying to make a few extra coins.  Instead, he was a man of sincerity, who stood in the presence of God, sent by God.  Paul was not seeking any personal gain.  He felt that God had sent him to the gentiles to let them know about Jesus Christ.  He was sincere and only cared about Jesus Christ.  Do you really care about Jesus Christ?
