Competence from God (2 Cor. 3:5)

“Not that we are competent

Of ourselves

To claim anything

As coming from us.

Our competence

Is from God.”

Paul explained that that he was not competent by himself (οὐχ ὅτι ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν ἱκανοί ἐσμεν) to claim (λογίσασθαί) anything as coming from him (τι ὡς ἐξ ἑαυτῶν).  His competence was (ἀλλ’ ἡ ἱκανότης ἡμῶν) from God (ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ,).  Only this Corinthian letter used this word ἱκανότης, that means sufficiency, ability, power, or fitness.  Paul made no personal claims to his ability or competence.  Paul, like Moses, relied on the grace of God to make any claims.  His ability or competence was from God, not from himself.  By himself, he would have been incompetent.  Do you recognize that your competence comes from God?
