This life only (1 Cor. 15:19)

“If for this life only

We have hoped

In Christ,

We are

The most pitiable

People of all.”

εἰ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ ταύτῃ ἐν Χριστῷ ἠλπικότες ἐσμὲν μόνον, ἐλεεινότεροι πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἐσμέν.

Paul said if it is for this life only (εἰ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ ταύτῃ) that we have hoped (ἠλπικότες ἐσμὲν μόνον) in Christ (ἐν Χριστῷ), we are of all humans, the most to be pitied (ἐλεεινότεροι πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἐσμέν).  Paul noted that if they had only hoped for this earthly life in Christ, they are to be pitied, the most pitied of all humans.  In other words, the resurrection was the main point of the Christian belief, not merely a good life here on earth.  The current benefits were minimal compared to an eternal resurrected life.  Do you pity anyone?
