The bugle (1 Cor. 14:8)

“If the bugle

Gives an indistinct sound,

Who will get ready

For the battle?”

καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἄδηλον σάλπιγξ φωνὴν δῷ, τίς παρασκευάσεται εἰς πόλεμον;

Paul then asked if a bugle (καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἄδηλον) gave an indistinct sound (σάλπιγξ φωνὴν δῷ), who would get ready to go to battle (τίς παρασκευάσεται εἰς πόλεμον)?  Paul then asked another more practical question.  What would happen to warriors as they prepared for battle and they just got a funny or indistinct sound from the bugle?  They would not know what to do.  They were trained to hear a certain set of bugle sounds before they advanced.  Speaking in tongues was like a useless bugle sound.  No one knew what to do with it.  Have you ever played a bugle?
