Speaking in tongues (1 Cor. 14:2)

“One who speaks

In a tongue

Not to men

But to God.

No one understands him,

But he utters mysteries

In the Spirit.”

Paul said that one who speaks in a tongue (ὁ γὰρ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ) speaks (λαλεῖ) not to men (οὐκ ἀνθρώποις) but to God (ἀλλὰ Θεῷ).  No humans understand him (οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἀκούει), but he utters mysteries in the Spirit (πνεύματι δὲ λαλεῖ μυστήρια).  Although Paul believed and taught that the gift of tongues was a charismatic gift, he tended to downplay it here as too mystical for most people.  He explained that the gift of speaking in tongues was a spiritual conversation with God and not with other humans.  The speaking in tongues was about mysteries of the Spirit, or secret heavenly things.  What do you know about speaking in tongues?
