“He who speaks
In a tongue
But he who prophesies
Edifies the church.”
ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ ἑαυτὸν οἰκοδομεῖ· ὁ δὲ προφητεύων ἐκκλησίαν οἰκοδομεῖ.
Paul said that he who speaks in a tongue (ὁ λαλῶν γλώσσῃ) edifies himself (ἑαυτὸν οἰκοδομεῖ). But he who prophesies (ὁ δὲ προφητεύων) edifies the church (ἐκκλησίαν οἰκοδομεῖ). Paul pointed out why prophecy was better than tongue speaking. While charismatic tongue speaking edified the person speaking, the prophecies edified the whole church or assembly of believers. Tongue speaking was useful for the individuals speaking in tongues. Prophecy, on the other hand, was much better for the larger community of believers. It built up the whole church, not just one individual. Are you more concerned about yourself or your church community?
