How do you know that you can save the other person? (1 Cor. 7:16)

“Wife!

How do you know

Whether you will save

Your husband?

Husband!

How do you know

Whether you will save

Your wife?”

τί γὰρ οἶδας, γύναι, εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώσεις; ἢ τί οἶδας, ἄνερ, εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις;

Paul said to the wives (γύναι).  “How do you know (τί γὰρ οἶδας) whether you will save your husband (εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώσεις)?”  Paul said the same thing to the husbands (ἄνερ).  “How do you know (ἢ τί οἶδας) whether you will save your wife (εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις)?”  Paul then asked a couple of simple practical questions to both the wife and the husband.  “How do you know that you are going to be able to save your wife or husband?”  Paul did not give an answer, since there was no certainty in how this was going to happen.  Do you care about saving your spouse?
