“Do you not know
That your body
Is a temple
Of the Holy Spirit
Within you?
This you have from God.
You are not your own.”
ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι τὸ σῶμα ὑμῶν ναὸς τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν Ἁγίου Πνεύματός ἐστιν, οὗ ἔχετε ἀπὸ Θεοῦ; καὶ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἑαυτῶν;
Paul asked them if they did not know (ἢ οὐκ οἴδατε) that their body (ὅτι τὸ σῶμα ὑμῶν) is a temple (ναὸς) of the Holy Spirit (Ἁγίου Πνεύματός ἐστιν)? Thus, they have God (οὗ ἔχετε ἀπὸ Θεοῦ) within them (τοῦ ἐν ὑμῖν). They are not their own (καὶ οὐκ ἐστὲ ἑαυτῶν), anymore. Once again, Paul asked an ironic question. Didn’t they understand that their body was a temple of the Holy Spirit? They became this temple of God with their baptism, since the Holy Spirit was within them. God sent his Holy Spirit to sanctify their bodies. Their body was not their own anymore, but belonged to God. Do you believe that you are a temple of the Holy Spirit?
