I will praise you among the gentiles (Rom 15:9)

The gentiles

Might glorify God

For his mercy.

As it is written.

I will praise you

Among the gentiles.

I sing praises

To your name.’”

Paul said that the gentiles (τὰ δὲ ἔθνη) should glorify God (δοξάσαι τὸν Θεόν) for his mercy (ἐλέους), as it was written (καθὼς γέγραπται).  “Therefore, I will praise you (Διὰ τοῦτο ἐξομολογήσομαί σοι) among the gentiles (ἐν ἔθνεσιν).  I sing praises (ψαλῶ) to your name (καὶ τῷ ὀνόματί σου).”  Paul indicated that the gentiles should glorify God for his mercy by citing Psalm 18:49-50.  “For this I will extol you!  Yahweh!  Among the nations, I will sing praises to your name.”  This was like 2 Samuel, chapter 22, where David sang Yahweh’s praises among the nations.  Yahweh was the tower of salvation to his anointed King David.  His descendants would be loved forever.  The enemies were all gone.  The Davidic dynasty began.  The use of the word “ἔθνη” means nations or gentiles, the non-Jewish people.  Thus, David was going to praise God among all the gentile nations.  Paul took this psalm of David and applied it to the Roman gentile Christians.  They should glorify God for his mercy that he has shown to the gentiles, just like he has taken care of the descendants of David also.  Do you consider yourself a gentile, a non-Jewish person?
