“Not because of works

Rebeca was told.

οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἀλλ’ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος, ἐρρέθη αὐτῇ ὅτι Ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσονι·
Paul said not because of works (οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων) but because of his call (ἀλλ’ ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος), Rebeca was told (ἐρρέθη αὐτῇ) that the elder son would serve the younger one (ὅτι Ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσονι). Paul based this saying on Genesis, chapter 25:23. Rebecca, who was barren, had prayed to Yahweh. She then conceived twins who struggled in the womb. She wanted to die, but Yahweh told her that two nations and two peoples were to come from her womb. One would be stronger and the elder would serve the younger. Once again there was a prophecy while the children were still in the womb. Esau was the elder by only a few moments at childbirth over Jacob. However, Jacob would be the chosen one, tricking his brother into getting Isaac’s blessing. Should the older brother take care of the younger brother?
