Jacob and Esau (Rom 9:13)

“As it is written.

‘I have loved Jacob,

But I have hated Esau.’”

καθάπερ γέγραπται Τὸν Ἰακὼβ ἠγάπησα, τὸν δὲ Ἠσαῦ ἐμίσησα.

Paul said as it is written (καθάπερ γέγραπται).  “I have loved (ἠγάπησα) Jacob (Τὸν Ἰακὼβ), but I have hated (ἐμίσησα) Esau (τὸν δὲ Ἠσαῦ).”  Paul used a quotation from the prophet Malachi, chapter 1:2-3.  Yahweh said that he loved Israel.  However, the Israelites questioned Yahweh, by asking how he had loved them.  Suddenly the name of the twin brother of Jacob, Esau, came up.  Yahweh responded that he had loved Jacob rather than Esau.  Edom was considered the land where Esau had settled.  Thus, Yahweh hated Edom.  He had made their hill country a desolation.  All of these allusions to Isaac, Rebecca, Esau, and Jacob would have been foreign to his gentile Christian readers in Rome.  This was clearly for the Jewish Christians in Rome.  Are there certain countries that you think that God dislikes?
