The Holy Spirit intercedes for us (Rom 8:26)

The Spirit helps us

In our weakness.

We do not know

How to pray

As we ought.

This very Spirit intercedes

For us

With groanings

Too deep for words.”

Paul said that likewise (Ὡσαύτως), the Spirit (δὲ καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα) helps us (συναντιλαμβάνεται) in our weakness (τῇ ἀσθενείᾳ ἡμῶν).  We do not know (οὐκ οἴδαμεν) how to pray (τὸ γὰρ τί προσευξώμεθα) as we ought to (καθὸ δεῖ).  However, this very Spirit (ἀλλὰ αὐτὸ τὸ Πνεῦμα) intercedes (ὑπερεντυγχάνει) for us with groanings (στεναγμοῖς) too deep for words or inexpressible (ἀλαλήτοις).  Only the Pauline letters used these words ὑπερεντυγχάνει, that means to intercede or to make petition for, and the word ἀλαλήτοις, that means inexpressible, unutterable, baffled words, or unexpressed.  Paul explained that the Holy Spirit helped them with their own weaknesses.  They did not know how to pray to God correctly.  However, the Holy Spirit intercedes for them with God not using words.  Paul’s readers did not know how to pray.  Luckily, the Holy Spirit was able to communicate with God the Father in a language unknown to humans.  Thus, their weak intercessions reached God via the Holy Spirit.  Do you feel that your prayers to God are weak?
