That the whole creation
Has been groaning
In labor pains
οἴδαμεν γὰρ ὅτι πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις συνστενάζει καὶ συνωδίνει ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν·
Paul said that we know (οἴδαμεν) that the whole creation (ὅτι πᾶσα ἡ κτίσις) has been groaning (συνστενάζει) in labor pains (καὶ συνωδίνει) until now (ἄχρι τοῦ νῦν). Only the Pauline letters used these words, συνστενάζει, that means to groan together, and συνωδίνει, that means to be in travail together. In fact, this is only time that either word is used in the whole Pauline literature, the only time they appear in any biblical writings. Thus, this was a unique expression of Paul. He said that they all knew that the whole of creation, living and non-living things, had been groaning together with their common labor birth pains until the current time. Paul continued with this magnificent poetic anthropomorphism. The whole created earth, human and non-human, was groaning with birth pains, hoping for the birth of a savior. Do you expect a savior to be born?
