“There is no fear of God
Before their eyes.”
οὐκ ἔστιν φόβος Θεοῦ ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν.
Paul said that there was no fear of God (οὐκ ἔστιν φόβος Θεοῦ) before their eyes (ἀπέναντι τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν). Paul knew why they were so wicked, because they did not feat God. This is a reference to Psalm 36:1, where the psalmist said that the deep in the hearts of the wicked, there was no fear of God. Before their eyes, they flattered themselves. They believed that their iniquity could not be found out. In this Psalm 36, there was a further description of these wicked people. Most of all, they did not fear God. They were flatterers, mischievous, and deceitful. They thought that no one knew what they were doing. They were on an evil path, not a good path. Paul finished with this flurry of evil doing by pointing out the source of this evilness, their lack of the fear of God. Just the opposite was true. Fear of God was the beginning of understanding God. Do you have a fear or respect for God?
