Everyone is a liar (Rom 3:4)

“By no means!

Although everyone

Is a liar,

Let God be proven true.

As it is written.

‘So that you may be justified

In your words,

And prevail

In your judging.”

Paul said that by no means (μὴ γένοιτο)!  Although every man is a liar or deceiver (πᾶς δὲ ἄνθρωπος ψεύστης), let God be proven true (γινέσθω δὲ ὁ Θεὸς ἀληθής).  As it is written (καθάπερ γέγραπται).  “So that you may be justified (Ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς) in your words (ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου), and prevail (καὶ νικήσεις) in your judging (ἐν τῷ κρίνεσθαί σε).”  Paul once again answered his own question.  All men were liars or deceptive as in Psalm 116:11, when David said in his consternation that everyone was a liar, since he trusted only in God, who is true and truth itself.  Then Paul quoted from the Septuagint Psalm 51:4-6, where David knew that he had sinned.  His transgression was in front of him.  He knew that he had done evil in the sight of God.  He recognized that the sin was against God alone, as he did not care about the human implications of his sin.  This was evil in the sight of God.  Thus, God was justified and blameless in passing judgment on him.  Then David hid behind the fact that he was born guilty, since he was a sinner from his conception.  Somehow, he was throwing his sinfulness back to his mother and sex in general.  Perhaps he was alluding to the human condition that is prone to sin or something akin to human original sin.  David wanted to be purified.  He wanted wisdom in his heart.  He wanted to be purged or purified with some ritual.  He wanted his sins hidden and blotted out.  He wanted a clean slate.  Paul here alluded to the sinfulness of man versus the faithfulness of God.  Are you a liar?
