“It is written.
‘The name of God
Among the gentiles
Because of you.’”
τὸ γὰρ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ δι’ ὑμᾶς βλασφημεῖται ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν, καθὼς γέγραπται.
Paul said that it is written (καθὼς γέγραπται) that the name of God (τὸ γὰρ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ) is blasphemed (βλασφημεῖται) among the gentiles (ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν) because of you (δι’ ὑμᾶς), the Jews. This was a reference to Isaiah, chapter 52:5, especially in the Greek Septuagint translation. Yahweh spoke to Isaiah and said that all day long, his name was despised. His people should know his name. This was about their captivity. The Israelites were oppressed as aliens in Egypt a long time ago. Now they were oppressed by the Assyrians without any good cause. It really had nothing to do with gentiles except that gentiles were the oppressors of Israel. Paul said that the name of God was blasphemed among the gentiles because of the Jewish people. The gentiles hardly knew Yahweh. Do you cause others to blaspheme about God?
