They lost hope (Acts 27:20)

“Neither sun

Nor stars

Appeared for many days.

This no small tempest

Raged.

All hope of our being saved

Was at last abandoned.”

The author of Acts indicated that neither sun (μήτε δὲ ἡλίου) nor stars (μήτε ἄστρων) appeared (ἐπιφαινόντων) for many days (ἐπὶ πλείονας ἡμέρας).  This no small tempest raged over them (χειμῶνός τε οὐκ ὀλίγου ἐπικειμένου).  All hope of our being saved (ἐλπὶς πᾶσα τοῦ σῴζεσθαι ἡμᾶς) was at last abandoned (λοιπὸν περιῃρεῖτο).  They traveled without seeing the sun or the stars for a number of days because the storm clouds covered the sky.  This was a giant storm that continued over them, so that they lost all hope of being saved.  Have you ever been in a storm that you thought that you might die?
