The Pharisees and Sadducees began to argue (Acts 23:7)

“When he had said this,

A dissension arose

Between the Pharisees

And the Sadducees.

The assembly was divided.”

τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἐγένετο στάσις τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων, καὶ ἐσχίσθη τὸ πλῆθος.

The author of Acts indicated that when Paul said this (τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος), a dissension arose (ἐγένετο στάσις) between the Pharisees (τῶν Φαρισαίων) and the Sadducees (καὶ Σαδδουκαίων), as the assembly (τὸ πλῆθος) was divided (καὶ ἐσχίσθη).  Just as Paul had hoped, the mention of the resurrection meant that the Pharisees and the Sadducees would get into an argument, since the Pharisees favored the belief in a resurrection after death, while the Sadducees did not believe in any kind of afterlife.  Paul had been successful with his Pharisee plea.  Do you believe in the resurrection?
