“Then this Roman commander arrived.
He arrested Paul.
He ordered him
To be bound
With two chains.
Who he was
And what he had done.”
The author of Acts indicated that when the Roman commander (ὁ χιλίαρχος) got near (τότε ἐγγίσας), he arrested or seized Paul (ἐπελάβετο αὐτοῦ). He ordered (καὶ ἐκέλευσεν) him to be bound (δεθῆναι) with two chains (ἁλύσεσι δυσί). He inquired (καὶ ἐπυνθάνετο) who he was (τίς εἴη) and what he had done (καὶ τί ἐστιν πεποιηκώς). This Roman commander took charge right away. He arrested Paul and had him bound with two chains. He wanted to know who he was and what he had done. He was not going to wait. He acted immediately. Have you ever been arrested?
