The man with the evil spirit (Acts 19:16)

“Then the man

With the evil spirit

Leaped on them.

He mastered

All of them.

He overpowered them.

Thus,

They fled

Out of that house

Naked

And wounded.”

καὶ ἐφαλόμενος ὁ ἄνθρωπος C, ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν, κατακυριεύσας ἀμφοτέρων ἴσχυσεν κατ’ αὐτῶν, ὥστε γυμνοὺς καὶ τετραυματισμένους ἐκφυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου.

The author of Acts indicated that then the man (ὁ ἄνθρωπος) with the evil spirit (ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν) leaped on (καὶ ἐφαλόμενος) them (ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν).  He mastered all of them (κατακυριεύσας ἀμφοτέρων).  He overpowered them (ἴσχυσεν κατ’ αὐτῶν).  Thus, they fled (ἐκφυγεῖν) out of that house (ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου) naked (ὥστε γυμνοὺς) and wounded (καὶ τετραυματισμένους).  Acts was the only Greek biblical writing that used this Greek word ἐφαλόμενος, that means to leap upon or assault.  This evil spirit then humiliated and injured these seven sons of Sceva.  He overpowered them so that they ran away naked and wounded.  They had failed to exorcise this man with the evil spirit by falsely using the name of Jesus and Paul.  These itinerant Jewish exorcists were a failure.  Have you ever pretended that you had more power than you actually had?
