Go in peace! (Acts 16:36)

“The jailer

The message

To Paul.

‘The magistrates

Sent word

To let you go.

Come out now!

Go in peace!’”

The author of Acts indicated that the jailer (δὲ ὁ δεσμοφύλαξ) reported (ἀπήγγειλεν) this message (τοὺς λόγους τούτους) to Paul (πρὸς τὸν Παῦλον) that the magistrates (οἱ στρατηγοὶ) sent word (ὅτι Ἀπέσταλκαν) to let them go (ἵνα ἀπολυθῆτε).  Therefore, they should come out (νῦν οὖν ἐξελθόντες) and go (πορεύεσθε) in peace (ἐν εἰρήνῃ).  This jailer, who was now a baptized Christian follower, told Paul about the message that he had just received.  They were to be let go, so that they could come out and go in peace.  This seems like a reasonable solution to this problem.  The magistrates wanted to show these troublemakers who was in charge.  After one night in jail, they were releasing them without any hard feelings.  That would be the end of that.  Would you be happy if you were released from jail?
