Stay out of Asia! (Acts 16:6)

“They went through

The region of Phrygia

And Galatia.

They were forbidden

By the Holy Spirit

To speak the word

In Asia.”

The author of Acts indicated that they went through (Διῆλθον δὲ) the region (χώραν) of Phrygia (δὲ τὴν Φρυγίαν) and Galatia (καὶ Γαλατικὴν).  They were forbidden (κωλυθέντες) by the Holy Spirit (ὑπὸ τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος) to speak the word (λαλῆσαι τὸν λόγον) in Asia (ἐν τῇ Ἀσίᾳ).  During the first missionary trip, Paul and Barnabas had been in the southern part of Phrygia and Galatia.  Phrygia was a kingdom in the west central part on the Sangarios River. Many heroic Greek mythology figures were legendary Phrygian kings, Gordias and the Gordian Knot, Midas with his golden touch, and Mygdon, a warrior against the Amazons.  The Galatians were a series of Hellenized Celtic groups.  It is not clear how far they went north here, since there were no cities or towns mentioned on this trip, other than Lystra, as there were in the first trip.  However, they got explicit commands in some form from the Holy Spirit to stay away from northern Asia, along the Black Sea.  Perhaps there were no Jewish communities there, or not any civilized groups there.  Have you ever felt that there was some place that you should not go to?
