The people of Iconium turn on Paul and Barnabas (Acts 14:5)

“An attempt

Was made

By both the gentiles

And the Jews,

With their leaders,

To mistreat

And Barnabas

And to stone them.”

The author of Acts indicated that an attempt (ὁρμὴ) was made (ὡς δὲ ἐγένετο) by both the gentiles (τῶν ἐθνῶν τε) and the Jews (καὶ Ἰουδαίων), with their leaders (σὺν τοῖς ἄρχουσιν αὐτῶν), to mistreat (ὑβρίσαι) these disciples or apostles of Jesus and to stone them (καὶ λιθοβολῆσαι αὐτούς).  Despite the difference of opinion about Paul and Barnabas, both groups those opposing them, be they gentile or Jew, had their leaders attempt to abuse them and stone them.  This was a serious affair, a life or death situation.  What would you do if everyone was against you?
