Paul and Barnabas in Iconium (Acts 14:1)

“The same thing occurred

At Iconium.

Paul

And Barnabas

Entered into

The Jewish synagogue.

They spoke

In such a way

That a great number

Of both Jews

And Greeks

Became believers.”

The author of Acts indicated that the same thing (κατὰ τὸ αὐτὸ) occurred (Ἐγένετο) at Iconium (δὲ ἐν Ἰκονίῳ) that had happened at Antioch in Pisidia.  Paul and Barnabas entered (Ἐγένετο αὐτοὺς) into the Jewish synagogue (εἰς τὴν συναγωγὴν τῶν Ἰουδαίων) at Iconium.  There they spoke (καὶ λαλῆσαι) in such a way (οὕτως ὥστε) that a great number (πολὺ πλῆθος) of both Jews (Ἰουδαίων τε) and Greeks (καὶ Ἑλλήνων) became believers (πιστεῦσαι).  These early Christian disciples traveled some 75 miles to Iconium, the capital of Lycaonia, a large rich city, about 120 miles north from the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of the Taurus mountains, and on the trade route between Ephesus and Tarsus.  Today Turkish Konya is a major city on the southwestern edge of the Central Anatolian Plateau with a metropolitan population of over two million people.  People have lived here since the third millennium BCE when it was known as Iconium, a major city.  Paul and Barnabas were going to repeat the same pattern as in Antioch of Pisidia.  They first went to the synagogue there.  Even though there was no mention of the Sabbath, it might be presumed.  They seemed successful as both some Jews and gentiles became believers.  They were called Greeks and not gentiles here.  So far, so good.  Would you be happy about a successful mission?
