I believe in Jesus Christ (Acts 8:37)

“Philip said.

‘If you believe

With all your heart,

You may.’

The eunuch replied.

‘I believe

That Jesus Christ is

The Son of God.’”

Although this verse was not found in the Nestle text, it is in other Greek Orthodox manuscripts.  This might have been a baptismal prayer liturgical formula.  This verse indicated that Philip (δὲ ὁ Φίλιππος) said (εἶπε) that if he believed (εἰ πιστεύεις) with all his heart (ἐξ ὅλης τῆς καρδίας), it would be permitted or lawful (ἔξεστιν) to baptize him.  The eunuch replied and said (ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ εἶπε) that he believed (Πιστεύω) that Jesus Christ (τὸν Ἰησοῦν Χριστόν) is the Son of God (τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ εἶναι).  This is an obvious early Christian baptismal formula.  He had to say “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”  At the same time, he had to have a full faith in Jesus Christ with his whole heart.  There was no indication of a trinitarian baptismal formula here.  However, the need to believe in the divinity of Jesus, as the Son of God was a prerequisite to being baptized and becoming a Christian.  Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God?
