They will be rooted out or destroyed (Acts 3:23)

“It will be

That everyone

Who does not listen

To that prophet

Will be utterly rooted out

From the people.”

ἔσται δὲ πᾶσα ψυχὴ ἥτις ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ τοῦ προφήτου ἐκείνου ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ.

The author of Acts indicated that Peter said that every soul (ἔσται δὲ πᾶσα ψυχὴ) who did not listen (ἥτις ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ) to the that prophet (τοῦ προφήτου ἐκείνου) would be utterly rooted out (ἐξολεθρευθήσεται) from the people (ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ).  Acts is the only Greek biblical writing that used this word ἐξολεθρευθήσεται, that means to destroy utterly, annihilate, exterminate, or root out.  This is based on Leviticus, chapter 23:29, speaking about those who did not keep the Day of Atonement.  “Anyone who does not practice self-denial during that entire day shall be cut off from the people.  Anyone who does any work during the entire day, such a one I will destroy from the midst of the people.”  Peter was applying this very severe punishment to those who did not listen to the new prophet, Jesus.  Would you listen to Jesus?
