The suffering Christ (Acts 3:18)

“God fulfilled

In this way

What he had predicted

Through the mouths

Of all the prophets.

His Christ Messiah

Would suffer.”

ὁ δὲ Θεὸς ἃ προκατήγγειλεν διὰ στόματος πάντων τῶν προφητῶν, παθεῖν τὸν Χριστὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπλήρωσεν οὕτως.

The author of Acts indicated that Peter said that God (ὁ δὲ Θεὸς) fulfilled in this way (ἐπλήρωσεν οὕτως) what he had predicted (ἃ προκατήγγειλεν) through the mouths (διὰ στόματος) of all the prophets (πάντων τῶν προφητῶν).  Acts is the only Greek biblical writing that used this word προκατήγγειλεν, that means to announce beforehand, promise, or predict. God’s Christ Messiah (τὸν Χριστὸν αὐτοῦ) would suffer (παθεῖν).  Peter indicated that the death and sufferings of Jesus was part of a divine plan that fulfilled the prophetic notion that the messiah would suffer.  Peter was not specific as to which prophet had foretold this, but he said that all the prophets had predicted this suffering.  Do you believe in predictions?
