Πέτρος δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς Μετανοήσατε, καὶ βαπτισθήτω ἕκαστος ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ὑμῶν, καὶ λήμψεσθε τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος.
The author of Acts indicated that Peter (Πέτρος δὲ) responded to them (πρὸς αὐτούς). He told everyone of them (ἕκαστος ὑμῶν) to repent (Μετανοήσατε) get baptized (καὶ βαπτισθήτω) in the name of Jesus Christ (ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ). Their sins would be forgiven (εἰς ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ὑμῶν). Then they would receive (καὶ λήμψεσθε) the gift (τὴν δωρεὰν) of the Holy Spirit (τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος). The correct response to Jesus was a metanoia, a change of heart. They were to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus, not a Trinitarian baptism. However, it was different than the baptism of John the Baptist for repentance only. The baptismal waters would wash away their sins. They would then receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Was this a separate action? Peter preached to them and told them what they must do, metanoia, repent or change their lifestyle, so that their sins would be forgiven. Then they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This is the only verse that links baptism and the bestowal of the Holy Spirit. Even here baptism is for the forgiveness of sins, so that then they could receive the Holy Spirit afterwards. Otherwise, the laying on of hands was normally connected with the bestowal of the Holy Spirit in Acts. How do you receive the Holy Spirit?
